The successful candidate(s) will be expected to pursue research of international quality that enhances, complements and/or extends current activity in the Department of Earth Sciences, and to provide academic leadership in the development of their subject area.  It is also expected that the post-holder will contribute to all aspects of the academic life of the Department and College. They will also contribute to the advancement of knowledge by research and scholarship that is world-leading and meets the highest standards of excellence in terms of originality, impact and rigour.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue research of international quality that enhances, complements and/or extends current activity in the Department of Earth Sciences, and to provide academic leadership in the development of their subject area.

Candidates will have a PhD, or equivalent qualification, in a appropriate discipline and extensive knowledge and expertise in an area of Earth, Environmental or Planetary Sciences at a level appropriate for the conduct of research, publishing new knowledge in leading international research journals, and teaching undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses.

Ear Institute The Ear Institute has circa 75 staff located in a multi-disciplinary facility dedicated to understanding the mechanisms of hearing and the causes of deafness. The Institute together with its partner, the Royal National Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital (RN ENT), is a major national and international centre for specialist training and research, hosting a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Theme in 'Hearing Health'. A RAND analysis of highly-cited publications ranked No.1 in England for both ‘Deafness and Hearing’ and for ‘Audiology and Speech & Language Pathology’. Training the next generation of auditory scientists is a priority at the Ear Institute. The candidate should be interested in applying deep learning methods to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of AI to address hearing loss. Role specific details: • This is a fixed-term role for 36 months in the first instance. • Research Fellows - 'Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6 with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis.'
