Massmart has announced that it is closing 23 Dion Wired stores as from today, Thursday 19 March 2020. A decision has yet to be made on whether the giant retail group will also close 11 non-performing Masscash stores.
The announcement was made just after 7am this morning on the JSE Stock Exchange News Service. The Massmart Holdings group includes Game, Makro, Dion, Builders and Jumbo Cash and Carry.
Massmart flagged in a January announcement that it may close underperforming Dion Wired and Masscash stores and could retrench about 3% of its workforce. It would also be implementing an organisational shake-up.

The company said at the time that it was experiencing heavy losses due to factors such as reduced customer spending on non-essential items, rising fuel costs, load shedding, municipal cost increases and the rise in VAT.
In its statement today, Thursday 19 March 2020, Massmart’s board said the decision to close the 23 Dion Wired stores with immediate effect was made after talks with labour and other stakeholders had been exhausted.
“Since 13 January 2020, management have consulted extensively with the affected employees; organised labour and other relevant stakeholders under the guidance of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration and all options/alternatives in respect of the potential closure of the affected stores have been exhausted, ” the statement reads.

“Accordingly, the Board have now taken a decision to close all of the non-performing stores. In light of the aforementioned decision, management will cease trading of the affected 23 Dion Wired Stores on 19 March 2020.”
The statement added that the company would continue to consult with the affected employees and organised labour in an effort to reduce job losses. Where “practical and reasonable” people would be redeployed to fill vacancies elsewhere within the group.
The group posted a R1.3-billion loss for its 2019 financial year to December 29, compared with a profit of R900-million in 2018.

Jackson said, “Cash-back websites only offer the full price if the phone is in perfect condition. Our Tech Trade-In system offers full price even if the phone is scratched or scuffed.” The only phones that cannot be accepted are those for which the IMEI number has been blocked on the Checkmend database of blacklisted, stolen or counterfeit goods. The system will then not allow the transaction to continue.”
From November, Tech Trade-In will accept mobile phones, tablets and iPod’s with a view to extending the offering in 2014 to include trade-ins on electronics like gaming consoles, notebooks, camera’s and navigation devices such as Garmin and Tom-Tom.
